Our first stop was to the furnace creek visitors center to pick up our junior ranger book for the kids. The Ranger Book is full of educational activities your children can complete during their exploration through the national park. Once they are done, these books can be brought back to the visitors center and they will earn a cool ranger badge.
In 1881 William T Coleman discovered Borax near the Furnace Creek Ranch. The Harmony Borax Works employed 40 men who produce 3 tons of borax daily. They utilized a 20 mule team to haul the borax to the nearby Mojave. Operations stopped after only 5 years and the company were bought out by Pacific Coast Borax. On December 31, 1974, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Me and Nolan had a great time exploring the trail.
