We find ourselves immersed in the fascinating world of trains at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California, alongside the adventurous Look Who’s Blogging team in the year 2022. Originally founded in 1956 at Griffith Park, the museum later relocated to its current site in 1958 and was named the Orange Empire Railway Museum. In 2019, it underwent another name change, becoming the Southern California Railway Museum, a title it proudly carries to this day.
Our knowledgeable guide, Brian, warmly welcomed us and provided an intimate tour of the entire museum. Our journey began at the Grizzly Flats Engine House number 6, an enchanting exhibit housing narrow gauge steam locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and the esteemed Ward Kimball Collection. It was fascinating to learn that Ward Kimball purchased this collection in 1948 from a sugar company and operated it on a 500-feet track in his backyard, affectionately naming it Grizzly Flats.
Excitement filled the air as we were scheduled to ride the OB-589 ‘Old Smokeless.’ However, a few technical hiccups delayed its start. Nevertheless, we continued our exploration, entering the West Side Lumber Company Caboose, which had spent its entire life trailing behind logging trains near Yosemite National Park.
Moving along, we arrived at Car House number 2, a treasure trove housing standard gauge electric locomotives, streetcars, and significant portions of the Pacific Electric Collection. The rain eased up a bit, allowing us to venture outside and explore the interactive signal garden. Our next stop was Holstrom Park, a delightful area that added to the charm of our visit.
The grand finale of our adventure took place at the Hugh T Smith Car House, showcasing an impressive collection of large passenger, freight, and electric cars. Climbing aboard the Union Pacific, the last major railroad completed to Los Angeles in 1905, felt like stepping back in time and savoring a slice of history.
As our tour of the trains came to an end, we reluctantly bid farewell to this captivating place. However, before concluding the day’s escapades, Chef Brian treated us to a delectable batch of carne asada tacos, adding a delightful culinary experience to our unforgettable day. Chef Brian’s warmth and skill made the perfect ending to an enriching and enjoyable visit.
