In Today’s Kim’s Adventure we’re starting off on our journey for our cross-country road trip. The first stop we make is to Needles California. Needles is a city in San Bernardino County located on the scenic Colorado River just across the bridge from Arizona. Contrary to popular belief, Needles was not named after Hyperdermic Needles, but after a group of pinnacles in the Mohave Mountains. The town became an important railway stop which prompted the Fred Harvey Railway company to build the neoclassical El Garces Hotel and Santa Fe station in 1908. Fred Harvey Managed a line of cafes and hotels known for their friendly service and nice dining facilities. The El Garces was the “Crown Jewel” of the entire chain, remembered for having real silverware and fresh flowers daily. But as travelers increasingly took to the road the El Garces popularity started to wane. It eventually closed for business in 1949 and was left abandoned in the 80’s.

Threatened with demolition, the Friends of El Garces was formed in 1993, and through their efforts the city of Needles was petitioned to purchase the station in 1999. Today the building serves as a local event and community center with spaces available for lease. They also offer guided tours that starts at 11am on Saturdays.

Upon arrival we realized everything was closed and wouldn’t be open until 10. So, we decided to just hang out near the cool mural. Well, if you come too early on a Saturday you can always look at some giant ants in the parking lot.
